How to Navigate With or Without a Compass?

While a compass won't show you where you are, it will help you locate your way home if you lose track of your direction.

You can navigate using three different methods:

  1. By landmarks
  2. By magnetic North (using the compass)
  3. By stars

Landmarks are objects that you can recognize when they appear. These include trees, buildings and rivers. Because they give you a visual clue about where you are, landmarks are very useful.

Magnetic North is simply the direction in which the Earth's magnetic field points. If you look up at a skyline, you will notice that the sun seems to be moving across it. The earth's magnetic field actually causes sun to move around. Even though it seems like the sun is moving across a skyline, it actually moves around horizons. At noon the sun is directly overhead. At midnight, the sun is directly below you. The earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, so the exact direction of the magnetic North pole changes every day. This means that sometimes you may be off course for quite a while.

Another way to navigate is with stars. The stars appear to rise or set above the horizon. These are fixed points in space that you can use to determine your location relative to other locations.

What is the most crucial survival tool for you if you're lost?

The compass shows us the direction north. It also tells us how far we've traveled since our beginning point. If you're traveling somewhere with mountains, the compass may not always show you where you need to go. However, if you're in a flat area, the compass should be able to show you the way.

You could also use a rock or a tree as a reference point if you don't own a compass. However, you can still use a landmark as a way to navigate but it will be easier to determine north.

What should you do first in a survival situation

In an emergency situation, you must assess the situation first. It is important to assess the situation and know where you are.

It is also important to understand what you can expect from the environment. For instance, you might not be in a position to communicate with anyone if you are far from civilization.

If you don't know anything at all, then you need to start by learning as much as you can as fast as possible.

It is best to seek immediate help if you are in danger. However, if you are safe, then you might want to take some time to gather information and figure out what happened.
